Why tumlblr is so important? I mean there are hundreds of other options. However, you need to spend some time on coding of those templates.

I actually chose to use Tumblr as my professional blog for small updates. I found Tumblr to be more convenient in optimizing for the search engines. Moreover, I have used J-Kit's comment plugin, which can easily be embedded with the template. They have some problem with page titles. But, that can also be easily fixed, Please have a look at my tumblog http://asifanwar.tumblr.com and feel free to do SEO analysis on it.

You have the tools available to you, you're not using them.

You aren't plugging your post tags into your header. You're plugging your post titles into your header title, so I don't know what your issue is there saying they're "non-existant"

What exactly is tumblr preventing you from doing? It's not like Google is treating tumblr any differently than any other sites.

Your poor SEO has everything to do with your theme and nothing to do with tumblr.

Hmm, I am not so sure about this. I have seen tumblr account get good traffic. As often is the case, you need plenty of good backlinks, and make sure the name (key words) of the post is the first thing that shows in the page title. This page is currently number 3 when you search for "tumblr seo" in Google.ca - not bad!

Some people have suggested to me that the best alternative is to use an SEO-friendly platform and customize it to look like Tumblr...that's my next tactic.

Perhaps a better question is who's failing here? Is Google failing to do a good job indexing Tumblelogs or is Tumblr failing to output good format?

Why can't we have the best of both worlds? That's the part that upsets me.

I always need to re-verify and index my site to Google. That shouldn't be the case, at all.
